CLOSE TO THE EYES OF GOD (PERTO DOS OLHOS DE DEUS)
At the age of 33, our narrator embarks on a life-altering journey, gazing upon the vast sea for the very first time. Her mission? To scatter her mother’s ashes into the ocean, a woman with whom she shared a complex and tumultuous relationship. Against the backdrop of poverty and destituteness, these two resilient women endured a life of hardship. But now, with her mother’s passing and the boundless sea stretching before her, the daughter seizes a unique opportunity—to embrace freedom in its purest form. Yet, she carries the scars of a wounded soul, her dreams shrouded in despair. For her, true freedom seems to lie in the power to dictate her own final chapter.

So, she embarks on a poignant journey. She sells the remnants of her mother’s legacy, acquires a boat, and equips it with only the essential provisions, all meticulously prepared for her intended voyage into the vast expanse of the ocean, where she envisions her death. With no way back to land, she makes an unexpected discovery —a stowaway, an enigmatic feline, has clandestinely joined her on this odyssey. From that moment onward, her desire to end her own life wanes, replaced by an unwavering determination to rescue the feline companion, even as the possibility of retreat slips further from her grasp.
From this deceptively simple premise, CLOSE TO THE EYES OF GOD embarks on a riveting exploration of the very essence of what drives a human being to lose themselves. It delves deep into the roots of our existence, the paths we choose—and those thrust upon us—the intricate web of choices and the stark reality of not always having the privilege to choose. Amid this labyrinth, a lost soul finds herself, slowly unraveling the threads that have bound her throughout her life’s journey. Mother and daughter, both victims of a system that turned a blind eye to their suffering, come to the forefront of this powerful narrative. Her death wish surprisingly becomes a profound awakening to the true value of life. She comprehends her mother, she understands herself, and she comes to grips with the complex tapestry of motherhood and caregiving. This isn’t just an ordinary nautical adventure; it’s an exhilarating dive into the depths of what it means to be a mother and a daughter. It’s a tale of redemption, forgiveness, a reconnection with ancestral roots, and a heartfelt tribute to the exquisite beauty of life—and the unwavering desire to preserve it.
